Event date: 3 April 2017, Monday
Our Start Small Dream Big (SSDB) 2017 Launch Party started out with a bang (literally!) with the help from our Executive Principal, Mrs Angie Neo. The event was filled with various activities that celebrated creativity and ingenuity, family involvement, our service to the community, our efforts for save the environment, and our dream for Singapore. This also kickstarted the K1 and K2 children involvement in this year’s SSDB Project. We were so excited take part in the activities that even the gloomy weather did not dampen our spirit!
The event started out with storytelling sessions from our parent volunteers. They read stories about service, nation-building, recycling, reinventing, creative and imaginative thinking, and about our local icons. The children enjoyed listening to the stories and asked various questions about the stories’ characters.
After getting some inspiration from the stories, the children were tasked to draw about what they could do to make Singapore a better place onto the SSDB Star. The K1 and K2 children drew various actions that showed service to the community such as:
-
Making thank you cards to friends, family and community helpers;
-
Picking up litter;
-
Helping their family by cleaning up the house;
-
Working together with friends to help the people in need;
-
Suprise the neighbourhood residents by gifting; or
-
Planting flowers in the garden to liven up the neighbourhood.
They were proud to see their stars hanging in the classrooms as the stars also represented their dreams of Singapore’s future.
While most of the children were finishing up their dream star, some where getting ready for the Green Fashion Show. The participating children and their family took up the challenge to create “clothings” out of recyclable materials. We were blown away by the variety and the high quality “clothes” that the participants managed to create. Who knew that the participants and their family members were extraordinary artists and craftsmen! As the “models” strutted their stuff, our young audience were amazed by and learnt the possibilites in creating new things from the recyclable materials. The Green Fashion show would not be a huge success without the help of the participating family members, who were either present on that day or worked behind the scene over the weekends.
Check out their designer “clothes”, yo!
Overall, the SSDB 2017 Launch Party was a huge success. The children, families and even the teachers enjoyed themselves throughout the event. The success of the event was attributed from the teachers’ great planning and management of the activities, the parental/family initiative to collaborate with the centre and, also the spontaneity and pure joy from all of our children.
With that, we looked forward to begin our SSDB 2017 Project with our community partner, St. Luke’s Eldercare.
