Every year, our children embark on the “Little Entrepreneur Project” which gives our K2 children the platform to experience how to be an entrepreneur and what an entrepreneur does in operating a business. This year, we collaborated with Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) to promote awareness of vulnerable mammals to our children. The theme was “I love Otters” and the Centre organised a carnival to bring all our children, teachers and family together to be a part our children’s learning experience and to instil in them the value of caring for these vulnerable animals.
Before the carnival, the teachers shared with the children about the otters and what they could do to save them through little actions, such as no littering, reducing waste and various ways to recycle and reuse items which they use on a daily basis . In a workshop at the Singapore Zoo, the children took a closer look at the life of an otter. The learning journey revealed the threats faced by the otters, and that they could take care the environment by practising the 3Rs (Recycle, Reuse & Reduce). Back in school, the children brainstormed on the practice of the 3Rs, and decided to organise a carnival to sell crafts from recycled materials such as cardboards, ice cream sticks, recycled bottles to raise fund.
In preparation for the carnival, children mooted the idea to make cookies and various crafts. They designed the banner, using recyclables, to inform their parents the date of the carnival, and items to be put up for sale. Coupons for the carnival was sold to parents in advance for them to purchase the items sold at the carnival. Parents turned up to support their little ones, and with the coupons, bought crafts and food made by the children. In addition, parents bought additional coupons to participate in the games created by the children. These games were created with the use of recycled cardboards, styrofoam boxes and various recycled materials. The parents’ participation and support were very encouraging to the children, and the experience instilled and inspired them to be champions of wildlife conservation.
