In support of ECDA’s “Start Small Dream Big 17“ initiative, Cedan Kindergarten embarked on a project entitled “Kindness Begins With Me“ which was to instil the values of kindness, compassion and respect among our children.
In essence, the project was approached from three aspects: home; school and community. The journey began:
In School:
-
We introduced the values and importance of kindness to all our students through lessons, story telling, games and videos in order to educate and inspire them to start, show and share kindness with everyone.
-
Singapore Kindness Movement (SKM) was invited to put up an interactive puppet ventriloquism show from which our students joined Singa and the Kindness Cubbies to explore values of kindness and learn about appreciation, respect, care and neighbourliness.
- Above that, our K1 and K2 students visited “Kindsville” at SKM where, through an Experiential Tour and Storytelling with Art & Craft, they were educated on what kindness meant and how they could be kind in small ways to others.
At Home:
-
Parents, grandparents, guardians and even domestic helpers were encouraged to work together with their children at home to spread the values of kindness to our young ones. They were urged to seize all opportunities to show kindness at home for such traits of kindness once picked up will serve the children well into their adult lives.
-
Simple bonding activities were introduced to assist parents to spent meaningful time writing down ( on hanger-shaped card by SKM) and taking photographs of good traits of kindness displayed by their children at home
In the Community
- A parent and center collaboration Charity Bazaar event was held on 1st July 17 to raise funds for Bright Hill Evergreen Home (BHEH) through: Monetary donations; sales of old newspapers and unusable items to “Karung Guni”; sales of children’s hand made handy crafts; sales of beloved toys, books, clothes, stationeries…; and sales of coupons for the bazaar’s games, food, drinks and shows. All students and parents alike, had a fun-filled time contributing towards this meaningful charitable cause.
- After the charity bazaar event, our students visited BHEH to spread words and acts of kindness. They mingled enthusiastically with the in-house residents through serving tea breaks, offering well wishes message cards (provided by ECDA) and presenting token gifts. To top it off, our students kept the seniors entertained with a variety of song and dance performances. All monetary donations, daily necessity items and proceeds collected from the charity bazaar were subsequently presented to BHEH.
By and large, the project had sparked off a powerful chain reaction from the school to the home and into the community where values and acts of kindness were taught, learnt and shared among all stakeholders concerned. It was a remarkable achievement and fully met our intended objectives set forth. More importantly, Cedan Kindergarten believes that in time to come, this project will inspire and motivate our young ones to serve the less privileged among us and contribute unreservedly to our society.
