"SAVE THE OTTERS cum LITTLE ENTREPRENEUR PROJECT 2017" by Kinderland  Preschool, Pandan Valley

In 2016, Kinderland collaborated with Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) for the “I Love Pangolins” Carnival to promote awareness of the Pangolins, one of the last few native mammals in Singapore, and to encourage our children to care for them.

This year, we continued this partnership with WRS to educate and further engage our children on the importance of conserving Singapore’s native wildlife through a dedicated and hands-on workshop, conducted at WRS. The children learnt about the otters, their natural habitat and the challenges they faced.

To get started on this project, our children went on a learning journey to the Singapore Zoo. They learnt how the zookeepers took care of the otters, the challenges which the otters faced living in an urban environment, how to sort recycled items into the recycled bins and keep the waterways clean, in order to provide a safer home for the otters. Back in school, preparations were made to hold a mini “I love Otters” Carnival.

On Friday, 21 July 2017, our parents joined us for our “I love Otters” cum Racial Harmony Day event at the school. The children from our PN1 to K2 made otter themed crafts for sale. They made items such as Glass terrariums depicting the Otters’ natural habitat, recycle bags and badges with the drawings the Otters, clay otters moulded by our children’s little hands, potpourri satchets , and Otters theme goodie bags. Held in conjunction with Racial Harmony Day, the different classes also sold foods of various races such as “Nasi Lemak”, “Roti Prata”, Dumplings, “Siew Mai”, “Sushi” and “Tortillas”. To add to the festive air, the children came dressed in their ethnic outfits. The K2 children had their first hands-on experience, selling their crafts and food items, where they learnt the important skills of being good entrepreneurs and effective communicators. The fund-raising project heightened our children’s awareness of endangered animals and how they could play a part in caring for them.

The event was a success and parents were informed that the nett proceeds from the event would go to the Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) Conservation Fund for the conservation of Singapore’s endangered native wildlife.

Otters related crafts made by the children for sale.

Children helped each other to set up their stores.

With their parents’ support and active participation, the children have a meaningful learning experience being an Entrepreneur for a day.
