To Our Unsung Heroes

Unselfish and noble actions are the most radiant pages in the biography of souls.” – David Thomas

In light of the recent Coronavirus epidemic, many of our frontline workers are working effortlessly day and night to help protect Singaporeans and our foreign friends. When the pandemic first broke out, many of us were frantic and lost as this was something that all of us had never expected for it to happen. While many of us may have lived through the SARS outbreak, our children are all experiencing this for the first time. Hence it was important for us to educate our children about the virus and how to protect themselves from it.

We started off by getting our K1 and K2 children to draw up a KWL chart with their class. The children were able to tell what they know and what are some questions they were curious about. From there, we used the children’s questions as a guiding tool for us to educate them.

While it was important for the children to learn about the coronavirus, it is also important for them to learn how to appreciate these frontline workers for their hardworking and efforts. In a children-led discussion, the children sat down together to think of how they can show their appreciations to these frontline workers. Based on the majority, the children decided to do a card to show appreciation to these workers.

Our K1 children decided to incorporate the use of recycled materials to create their cards. The children used magazines and newspaper to form the words - Thank You Our Unsung Heroes. The children also drew pictures of these frontline workers and used it to decorate their card.

Our K2 children decided to do a ‘bye-bye germs’ card for the doctors and nurses. They got the idea from a previous art and craft activity done with with their teacher and decided to incorporate it into their cards. The children created ‘germs’ using the straw blowing technique. They then wrote little notes of thank you to the healthcare workers and and decorated their cards with their love.

The children were pleased and excited about their final product and cannot wait to deliver them to the frontline workers. However, as Singapore sees more rising cases, it is unfortunate as our children has yet gotten a chance to deliver their appreciation to them. Hopefully when the situation gets better, they will be able to deliver their heartfelt wishes to these frontline workers.
