Our centre’s chosen theme for this year is - Caring for Nature and Environment. We focused on the sub-theme of “Water Conservation” where we intend to raise awareness on the importance of conserving water. Children had the opportunity to participate in activities that teaches them on the importance of practicing water conservation.
In conjunction of World’s Water Day, children participated in an activity where they had to bring a 1.5 litre bottle filled with water from home. They were then challenged to use only the water from the bottle throughout the day for their handwashing and teeth-brushing routines. Children were able to share their feelings and experiences whereby they shared that the water they brought from home were not enough and that they have to ration out their water usage for the day. This teaches them not to waste water necessarily and instead, to conserve them whenever possible.
In addition, children also were exposed to the practice of “half-flush” whereby lesser water is used as compared to when they press the flush fully all the way down. They were able to see that even with half-flush, the toilet bowl will still be cleared.
Our centre also practices reusing the water used for washing vegetables to water the plants at the garden situated outside our centre. Children also had the opportunity to water the plans weekly during their outdoor time.
Lastly, the K1 and K2 class attempted to digitally illustrate a poster on water conservation where they each tooks turns to contribute their creativity through the digital illustration. Children had fun as they used the iPad in creating the poster.
Through these activities, children were observed able to understand the importance of water conservation and shared that they wish to continue the water conservation practices both at home and in the centre.
