Earth Day Celebration
Moving on from World Water Day, we celebrated Earth Day one month later on 22nd April. On this day, it aims to raise awareness of the need to protect the resources within Mother Earth for the future generations. The theme for the celebration revolved around ‘upcycling’.
During the week long celebration, the children engaged in specific activities:
-
Infant and Playgroup children upcycled socks to create soft toys
-
Nursery 1 and 2 children upcycled white shirts and recreated them with tie dye designs
-
Kindergarten 1 and 2 children upcycled shirts and recreated them into bags
Focusing on upcycling shirts into bags, the aim of the activity was for children to understand how there are ways to repurposes certain items that they do not have a purpose for, into a product of better value or quality. During the activity, the children would utilize scissors to cut out thin strips at the bottom of the shirt, before tying them together. After the activity, the children expressed amazement and wonderment over how a simple shirt could ‘transform’ into something vastly different. The children also shared about how they can create more bags with other shirts that they do not need or donate it to others who can benefit from them.
Ultimately, we hope that this celebration reminds children on the need to be grateful for the resources that we have ready access to. In order to extend the children’s learning, we also conducted a donation drive and a fashion parade, look out for the next post for more adventures!
