As part of our commitment to fostering intergenerational connections and promoting environmental sustainability, our Kindergarten 1 (K1) children recently participated in a heartwarming Start Small Dream Big (SSDB) project. This initiative saw our young learners collaborate with elderly members of the community to create piggy banks using recycled materials.
The project kicked off with an engaging introduction to the importance of recycling and reusing materials. The children learned about different types of recyclable items and how they can be repurposed into useful objects. This session ignited their curiosity and set the stage for the collaborative craft activity.
The highlight of the project was the hands-on crafting session where the children and elderly worked side by side. Using items such as plastic bottles, cardboard, and fabric scraps, the participants transformed these everyday materials into unique and colorful piggy banks. This activity not only sparked creativity but also provided a wonderful opportunity for the children to bond with the elderly, share stories, and learn from each other’s experiences.
The elderly participants brought a wealth of wisdom and creativity to the table, guiding the children with patience and care. In turn, the children’s enthusiasm and fresh perspectives brought joy and a sense of accomplishment to the elderly. This mutual exchange of skills and companionship was a beautiful demonstration of the core values of caring and community spirit that we strive to instill in our young learners.
