The toddlers of both Joy A and B proved this week that gardening is an activity for all ages as they pitched in to help expand the little garden started by the N1 class. Partnership with parents was once again the cornerstone of this initiative, one that was met with great enthusiasm as the parents responded by bringing in a myriad of vegetable scraps and recycled items. In the days leading up to the planting activity, the children’s curiosity was most certainly piqued as they interacted with these recycled items and learned about the different vegetable scraps that they and their peers brought to school such as carrot tops, spinach and mint as well!
Before embarking on their planting journey, the Toddlers were encouraged to look at the garden that was started by their older friends. Not only did this provide them with a visual example of what they were going to do, but it also drummed up more excitment about the project. The Toddlers were then introduced to the process of planting with some being able to verbalize the word “water” to show their understanding of what is needed to have plants grow.
The recycled materials that were brought in became pots to house the vegetable scraps. Children were encouraged to fill their new pots with cotton wool before carefully planting their vegetable scraps. They were given the chance to spray the cotton wool with water afterwards. The children enjoyed their gardening experience very much!
