In preperation for the finale of this year’s SSDB project, both K2 classes joined in the fun of upcycling large soda bottles that they brought from home. The children spent the day immersed in activities which highlighted the importance of the 3 Rs and built their soda bottle pots from scratch. Not only did they enhance their fine motor skills but they manged to stretch their imaginations through creative expression. The K2s invigorated their sense of ownership for this project as their upcycled pots were going to be displyed in the garden.
To foster cooperation between classes of different levels, a simple ceremony was held, during which the K1s passed their decorated bottles to the K2s. The children learned about the value of teamwork and support as these extra bottles from the K1 classes will go a long way in providing homes for more plants in the garden in the future.
On our SSDB Planting Day, the children were very eager to start their activity. Even though they were exited, the K2s remembered to observe safe distancing measures as they filled their upcycled pots with planting soil and ensured that their newly re-potted vegetables had enough water.
From the younger classes germinating vegetable scraps to the graduating classes moving our humble indoor garden outdoors, it had been a successful SSDB project this year as the whole centre worked towards sustainability and love for the environment. We look forward to building closer ties with our community partners, our parents and our children for future projects!
