Kidz Meadow Childcare (Buangkok Crescent) held a Mini Charity Bazaar event on Wednesday, 29 June 2016, as part of the ‘Start Small Dream Big’ (SSDB) initiative. Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Social and Family Development, Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, was the Guest-of-Honour.
Among the distinguished guests: Dr Intan Azura Mokhtar (Grassroots Adviser for Ang Mo Kio GRC), Mr Anuar Yusop (Executive Director, Association of Muslim Professionals), and Mr Azmi Muslimin (Chairman of MERCU Learning Point).
The centre’s children, teachers and parents came together to prepare for the Bazaar, themed “We have the Kampung Spirit in Us”. They worked together to make posters and crafts for the event. The highlights were the homemade kuih (traditional desserts) such as such as pulut serunding and and and ondeh-ondeh, showcasing what they have learned during their recent visit to Kampung Lorong Buangkok.
The children’s visit to Kampung Lorong Buangkok, Singapore’s last existing village, was part of their project. The visit allowed them to experience the unique kampung environment, listen to stories of the residents, play traditional kampung games and even learn how to make traditional Malay kuih. They also discovered the meaning of the term ‘gotong royong’ or community spirit, which was a strong feature of kampung life in the past.
The delicacies and crafts lovingly made by the children, with help from their teachers and parents, were a huge draw at the Bazaar. All proceeds from their sales will be donated to the Malay Youth Literary Association (4PM), to support their Ramadan on Wheels (ROW) programme. 4PM is one of the 58 beneficiaries supported by the President’s Challenge this year.
It was heart-warming to see parents and residents coming down to support the children by buying the food and crafts, and helping them to give back to society and the community in a meaningful way!
