During the SSDB launch, there was an introduction presentation presented to the children, on what the SSDB project is about and the meaning of the theme, “Caring Beyond Generations”.
Children watched the SSDB Introductory video and also were told an original story that was written by a Teacher from the SSDB Team, titled, ‘Tim’s Special Saturday with his Grandparents’ which was presented to the children through Finger Puppet Storytelling.
During the launch, children also had an opportunity to create a card for their Grandparents. They then ‘mailed’ out their Grandparent’s Card into a “Postbox”. The card will be given to the children’ grandparents on Grandparents’ Day.
There was a briefing and sharing session conducted for the children at school before we went for the 1st visit to the Eldercare Centre.
During the briefing teacher shared with the children the rules they had to observe and how they can make their visit to the Eldercare Centre a fruitful and exciting visit.
The resources that were provided by the SSDB team were used during the briefing. The story, ‘REMEMBERING FOR THE TWO OF US’ was read to the children. Children also watched ‘Sharity’ cartoon videos and each child also received ‘CARE DEEPLY, SHARE DEEPLY with Sharity & Friends’ flashcard kit.
- National Day Celebration with the Elders.
Both Children and the Elderly had great fun being engaged in the activities that were prepared for them. During the first visit, they played an ice breaker game, where the Children and the Elderly asked questions to each other, to do simple introduction of themselves, using the Flashcards that were available in both Englishand Mandrin.
During the craft activity, Children and the Elderly decorated a photo frame (made using the ice-cream sticks) each using the decorative items, (glittered and colourful foam stickers and colourful buttons) that were provided to them.
After decorating their photo frames the children and the Elderly exchanged the photo frames among their groups as a form of “gift exchange”.
After the Art & Craft Activity, Children and the teachers conducted and participated in a few simple chair workouts with the Elderly. As the songs were familiar to the Elderly, they enjoyed themselves when they did the chair workouts together with everyone.
Children showcased NDP performances for the elderly at the end of the celebration.
- Mid- Autumn Celebration with the Elders
Both Children and the Elderly had great fun and exciting experience, being engaged in the activities that were prepared for them. During the second (last) visit, there was a discussion and sharing session about Mid-Autumn festival where the children asked the Elderly questions about their experiences pertaining to Mid-Autumn festival. The Elderly were happy to share their knowledge and experiences about Mid-Autumn festival to the children.
Children and the Elderly were then engaged with completing handmade puzzles made by the teachers. The puzzles they had to complete, were pictures related to the Mid-Autumn festival. Children and the Elderly were encouraged to share about the pictures after they had completed fixing the puzzles.
After the puzzle activity, children and the teachers conducted and participated in a few simple chair workouts with the elderly. As the songs chosen were familiar to the Elderly, they enjoyed themselves when they did the chair workouts together with everyone.
Children showcased Mid-Autumn festival performances for the elderly at the end of the celebration.
Overall, the SSDB project was a success. It was also truly a fruitful and heart-warming experience for the Elderly, the children and the teachers that were involved in the project. All of us are grateful that we got to spend meaningful time interacting with the elderly at the Eldercare centre and we now embrace the importance of ‘Caring Beyond Generations’ more, after this eye-opening experience.
Thank you😊
