This is Part 1 of our SSDB Project:
Awareness Education
We invited SAVH to share some experiences on how the visually handicapped deal with everyday lives.
Ms Dolores from SAVH brought a client (Mr Wilson) from the organization to address children’s queries.
Mr Wilson was blind in one eye and he had 50 percent vision in the other.
They also brought Braille cards and other collaterals to ignite the children’s interest.
Mr Wilson showed the children some ‘Touch Art’ projects. He showed them how to make bookmarks out of used stamps. He explained how they relied on the sales of these Touch Art items for their livelihood.
The children also asked questions and Ms Dolores and Mr Wilson shared information such as
-
How we should hold a visually handicapped person’s elbow / shoulder to guide him/her.
-
How a visually handicapped has to go through training to use the white cane.
-
How we can keep our eyes healthy
-
The 5 senses and their importance
Mr Wilson ended the session by singing some songs! The children clapped and sang along too!
At the end of the session, the children became more aware of what a visually handicapped person has to go through and how they go about their daily lives.
