As we are getting ready for the Food and Fun Fiesta, Second Chance to promote the 3 Rs, the children of Noah’s Ark CDC were directly involved in creating the props for the games. We have a total of 8 games that needed props to be made from recycled materials mostly. While getting the children to dirty their hands, they were also able to understand, first-hand, how second chances can be given to different materials, so that they are reused to make something useful.
The first game to be created, is one of the most typical game you would see as you walked down a “pasar malam” (night market). Fishing! The K2s were involved in making fishes out of ordinary plastic bottles. They had fun making colourful fishes.
Together with the K2s, the K1s too made a craft of another water loving animal for a ping pong ball blowing game. The seals! They were so happy with their adorable looking seals that were made from just 2 things, old newspapers and paint. Of course, they had to make blowers too, out of tissue rolls, or we wouldn’t be able to play the game, would we?
Another game that cannot be left out at carnivals would be “Knock the cans!”. For this game, the N2 children turned used metal cans into cute little cows with just paint and waste paper. Just look at these animals that go moo!
Can you see the similarities between the game props so far? Yeah! They are all made to represent the different animals. The reason being that we aim to raise awareness of the 3 Rs by emphasising on how it will affect the animals around us, to the extend that, one day there will be children who would not know how a whale looks like. Talking about whales, the game that took on its representation was “Tic, Tac, Toe”. A twist to a classic favourite. For this craft, the N1s took on the challenge of painting tiny egg carton pieces blue and sticking on pipe cleaners and googly eyes to complete the craft. The tic tac toe box itself, was painted by the children, but as it needed hot glue to hold it together, the teachers took up the task, for the most part.
There’s still the penguin and bird crafts that the N2s got involved in. The penguins were made from plastic bottles as well and are to be used in a game of bowling. Aren’t they just adorable? Don’t worry, those paper pieces that the children were using were from old newspapers!
As for the bird crafts, all we needed were the bottle caps from used cartons or bottles. “It’s so easy to make!” was what the N2s said. The birds were then attached to a DIY game of basketball, which was made from cardboard and the cardboard piece that’s left when you use up your tape.
The last game prop got the N1s involved and it was for the game, “Run, Run, Run” which is inspired by the classic computer game, “Pinball”. The children helped with painting cardboard boxes green as this game was not based on an animal but the 3Rs. They also helped with pasting on ice cream sticks on the board and cups at the bottom. Just look at the end product!
