This year, we embarked the journey on celebrating racial harmony as we felt the importance to raise children’s awareness on differences and appreciating diversity. In Term 2, we focused a lot on raising awareness towards the different cultures in Singapore. The N2s explored on the similiarities and differences of each cultures such as the food, costumes. The children also interviewed people of other races during their daily outdoor walk to learn more about their cultures.
Our Racial Harmony Day was the focal point of our SSDB project. Joined by the N2s,K1s and K2s we started the day with a sharing on Racial Harmony Day. This included the past event which led up to commemorating Racial Harmony Day. Children expressed their fears based on the 1964 Racial Riot and hopes for the future. The K2 children also shared ways in which they could implement to preserve the peace and harmony which could be implemented in their daily lives such as not teasing others who are of different races or who does things differently from them.
We were then joined by the Drum Raiders who provided children with a hands-on experience and allowed the children to be immersed with musical instruments of the 3 main races in Singapore: Malay, Chinese and Indian. They were taught the correct ways of playing and even spotted the similarities between some instruments across the cultures such as the drums and cymbals. Children had a banging good time!
The parents also played a huge role in making our event a success, apart from dressing their children up in the various costumes, they brought in various snacks from the different cultures to be shared during tea break. Children had a chance to try murukku, pappadom, nonya kuehs, Chinese sticky candies, cakar ayam and more! I’m sure it was a day to remember for everyone.
