**Our Project Journey**

At LSK, we believe in creating opportunities for children to learn values, practise them and embrace them. We have embarked on showing care and love for the people in the community since 2015. We adopted an elderly woman who collects tin cans in 2016 when the rag-and-bone elderly woman retired in 2015.

This year, we have planned for our pupils to go beyond just donating tin cans for the elderly woman. The children affectionately call her Aunty Grace.

We started this year’s project by finding out what Aunty Grace does after receiving our donation of cans. We recorded the moments on video and showed it to the children. When the children found out that Aunty Grace had to wash each can and crush it after receiving the donated cans, they talked about doing more for her. Regardless of age, the children from N1 to K2 classes decided to wash their tin cans and flatten them before donating the next lot.

We also wanted to teach children that the best gift to give to someone is to give something that meets the receiver’s needs and can make a difference to the person. Class discussions were facilitated by teachers. The children recollected the video of Aunty Grace and they thought she might need other things besides the tin-cans. Each class of children came up with their own ideas of what they could buy for her.

On 21 April 2017, Aunty Grace was invited to LSK and we arranged for groups of children to present their gifts to her. For children to watch how appreciative Aunty Grace was and to actually feel the sense of joy themselves was just precious.

Reflection

We hope that the process of thinking through, collecting money, buying the gifts and presenting the gifts was such a meaningful one that children would want to look out for people who need help and to perform act of kindness as part and parcel of living when they grow up.
