After visiting the community garden and learning about planting from the gardener, we decided to set up a mini indoor garden with the children. The parents helped to collect the styrofoam boxes from the grocery stalls and the children helped to collect seeds from home to do the planting activities in the classroom. We have redesigned the classroom to set up a mini garden corner for the children to do gardening. The children were excited to participate in the process of planting, they helped to water the plants daily. They also got to lay the soil in the styrofoam boxes and insert the seeds into the soil. Through the activities, they learnt that plant cannot grow in an overcrowded environment as it needs space to grow.
Moreover, the teacher also read storybook about measurement of plants to the children to help them better understand how to use non-standard materials to measure the height of the plants. Every week, the children got to observe and measure how the plants grow. Recording sheets were also given for the children to write and illustrate how tall the plants have growth. Besides that, we also provided tongue depressors and unifix-cubes for the children to measure the heights of the plants. Through this activities, we have seen the children growing interests with gardening and they are looking forward for the plants to grow taller each day!
