Love The Nature: Water, An Essential Natural Resource

Natural resources are essential to humankind. One of the most crucial resources would be water. Living in Singapore, where our water sources are at risk, it is important that children learn about the importance of water conservation.

Children and parents from MK@First Toa Payoh celebrated World Water Day by learning about the importance of water conservation and completing exciting activities. They brought home a list of good habits that they can cultivate together with their parents to help save water as a family.

Through this, children learnt about the impact of saving water and every day habits that they can cultivate to conserve water. They were highly encouraged to practice good habits such turning off the tap when brushing their teeth and reusing the water after washing vegetables to water the plants.

Making a family trip to Marina Barrage was one of the suggested activities to learn more about the importance of saving water and getting up-close with Water Wally, the mascot of PUB. A visit to the home appliance store was also suggested for children to search and identify electrical appliances that are energy-efficient. This includes, refrigerators, air-conditioners and washing machines. The children counted the number of ticks listed on them which indicated the energy- efficiency of the appliances. Apart from that, children also created posters with their parents at home to create an awareness on the importance of saving water. Through these activities, children are able to appreciate water more and this raises awareness on water conservation.

In school, K1 and K2 children read The Adventures of Water Wally & Sally books such as ‘All The Water Is Mine’, ‘Saving Crab’ and ‘Bringing Water to Terry’. They enjoyed listening to the story and were immersed by the illustrations of the books. After reading the book, children shared ways to save water and are more geared up to save the Earth!
