Our centre has chosen to protect and care for the environment, the idea was generated from the children as we read they chanced upon the captain green and water wally series. Therefore, we delved deep into exploring ways we can save our planet Earth with our efforts, even as children themselves. Throughout the SSDB project period, we were engaged in different activities, with collaboration with parents and community.
In May, we started with a game to learn more about the importance of taking care of our environment, which children suggested to pick up trash, throw rubbish in bin, instead of littering. We have been observing the rubbish laying around when we’re on outdoor walk. Hence through this game “rubbish collectors VS litterbugs”, we played both roles. Children shared it’s easier to litter but they do not like the places around them to be dirty and messed up. We have to dispose rubbish proper, appreciate cleaners helping us to keep places clean.
Next, we engaged the 4 to 6 years children to be part of the initiative to be “Clean and tidy ambassadors” for a day. Children will go around during their outdoor nature walk day to pick up rubbish. For 5-6 years children we even attempt to get them to sort the collected rubbish according to recyclables (bag with ♻️) or non recyclables (bag with no logo).
Next in June, the 5 years children carried on to learn about the 3Rs, which in one of our activities, we collected recycled items of various materials (plastic, paper, metal, glass) to do sorting. Children get to discover the recycling logo on different collected items, they were eager to share their findings. Then, they worked in small groups to sort their items into the respective recycling box!
In July, we invited drama vendor, “The Voice” to present a virtual drama show, “Eco-friends” to our 4 to 6 years children. It was an interactive show, teaching them the importance of using non-disposable items such as metal utensils, recycled bag, lunch box rather than disposable items such as plastic utensils, plastic bag, styrofoam box. Children were also more aware of the causes and effect of climate change. Hence, the importance of reduce wastages, reuse old things and recycle items.
In August, we had a Family Day in centre with games & activities for all level children and their families. In one of the stations, we organised a “best sustainable outfit” voting for family to create an outfit for their child using recycles materials. Families and teachers own a vote to be given on the day itself, children are encouraged to put on on the day itself for showcase.
The top 5 best dressed will be announced on our school portal for recognition. Additional, all participants will receive a certificate of recognition, while the top 5 best dressed will be awarded certificate for top best dressed.
In September, we had a home centre partnership with our 4 to 6 years families, to create a lantern using recycled materials. Children were excited to bring their created lanterns out for their lantern walk with their friends on the Mid-Autumn Festival Day. They enjoyed sharing and discussing on their lantern, and even had their show and tell about their lanterns.
Lastly, to end off the project, we collaborated with Gardens By The Bay, to do the “Green Guardian* quest. It was a parental involvement where activities will be completed at home, with parents showing photos of their child engaged in the selected activities. Tickets received are used for the Term 4 fieldtrip to the conservatories. It was a fruitful journey with the support of our parents, as well as our community partner, Gardens By The Bay. Thank you!
