• We visited the Kindness Gallery in the month of May in line with our national kindness campaign and the idea of showing our appreciation for the construction workers came about when a few of the K1 children took notice of the construction workers walking past the Kindness Gallery while we were waiting for our chartered bus on our way back to school. Naturally, the children showed interest to know more about the kind of work these workers do and they kept asking, “Teacher, what are they doing? And why?”
• Using the opportunity, we talked about the hard labor and the types of working conditions these workers will have to endure daily, hence when we guided our children to think of nice, practical gifts we can give to them, the whole class eventually agreed to make and give them a nice, chilled drink to quench their thirst.
• In the midst of discussion, the children saw the gardeners who were maintaining our school garden. One of the children suggested, “What about the gardeners? Can we give them drinks too?” Upon discussion, we decided to prepare more so that we could also show our appreciation to the gardeners.
• While the K1 class was discussing and choosing on the types of drink, the children had the chance to share their thoughts and eventually they agreed to vote for the “best” and “suitable” drink we could make for these workers. Among all the different types of drinks, the K1 children had shortlisted fruit-based drinks i.e. watermelon juice, apple juice, grape juice as they said these drinks are what they will think of when they are really thirsty. Some of them said, “it’s nice”, “It’s healthy”, “because I like grape juice.”
With the Ribena and the isotonic powder, the children mixed them together to create the Ribena cum isotonic chilled drink. The children were so enthusiastic and delighted trying to imagine how the workers will feel like when they taste the tasty drink that they have made.
The children prepared their personalised messages that they wanted to tell the workers such as, “Thank You!”, “You are the best”. They were very excited while writing those encouraging words and they made sure that the cards looked beautiful and presentable.
Finally! The children got to show their appreciation to the gardeners and construction workers!
