To wrap-up our SSDB learning journey, the children spent a day harvesting and enjoying the “fruits” of their labour, or in this case, the Kangkong vegetables that they had planted and nurtured over the course of the past few weeks.
Some of the children’s parents had helped to bring the seeds home to plant and nurture earlier at the start of our project. The parents, who are also healthcare heroes working in Changi General Hospital, found that gardening can be a fun and fulfilling activity to connect with their children by sharing and working towards a common goal. It also proved to be a therapeutic activity that provided both stress relief and also improved their well-being.
As the Harvest Day activities went into full swing, the parents and childrenbrought back the plants that they had nurtured at home.
The children from each class also took turns to harvest the fully grown vegetables and also washed and prepared them to be cooked. Finally, all the children tucked into the healthy and nutritious vegetables.
As the day came to an end, the children and their parents also brought back some of the vegetables which had been packed into healthy gift packs to be enjoyed at home.
It has truly been a meaningful and fulfilling activity for the children and their parents here at Changi General Hospital.
