Our SSDB project is entitled - Green Hands, Keen Minds, Loving Hearts. The aim of our project is to get parents and children more involved in caring for our environment and community. The activities in this project will help to foster a caring attitude towards the environment and the elderly in our community.
There are three components in our project:
-
Go Green in the Garden: Gardening using compost made from food waste prepared and contributed by the children and parents.
-
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle: Parents donate food items in exchange for crafts created using recyclable products created by the children. The food items will be donated to charity.
-
Green Hand, Loving Hearts: Creating terrariums with elderly patients and presenting it to them after the activity.
Prior to the first event- Go Green in the Garden, children and parents helped to contribute fruit peels to be placed in our compost bin. The children prepared the fruit peels by helping to cut them into smaller pieces to aid in the composting process.
On 24th May 2018, we embarked on the first component of our project - Go Green in the Garden. The children were excited to be able to use the compost they had prepared to fertilize the plants in the school garden.
In addition, the children planted new seeds using recycled containers as seed starters. The seedlings will be transplanted into larger pots when they are ready.
Stay tuned for more updates as we post more stories in each segment.
