We kicked off the SSDB project involving toddlers to K2 children. Children enjoyed creating their own mini gardens. Through various opportunities children learned to set up their vegetable gardens, harvest vegetables and the cook, cooked the vegetables for them, served during lunch.
The gardening provided various opportunities for children to explore. The children learned about the benefits and importance of eating vegetables, the essential needs of a plant to grow and the tools for harvesting.
Children displayed a sense of accomplishment and gratification towards the gardening experience. Children celebrated their achievements growing spring onions, chives, chili, ginger, spinach, red spinach, and pumpkin. Through gardening children learned the process of growing vegetables, the different stages, the time taken to grow and bringing it on to plate. Children displayed curiosity and observed the pumpkin plant every day as it takes long time to grow.
Gardening with children provides them with skills to practice locomotor skills, body management skill and object control skills while they handle the little tools, soil and water. Gardening encouraged our children to love nature and value their food as they harvest the vegetables.
