Garden Heroes

Our theme for this year’s SSDB project is ‘Caring for the Environment’. We believe that children should be made aware on the importance of taking care of the environment at early stage of their life.

This year, we focused on gardening to instill the importance of being environmental friendly among our children. At the same time, it is a great way to teach them the values of responsibility and patience.

Ultimately, we hope to bring our children and their families closer to the environment and appreciate the wonders of nature together!

To set things off, the teachers briefed the children about the project and the different resources that they will be provided. The children watched the SSDB video and was introduced the different characters and the meaning to the slogan, “No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.”

During the launch, teachers talked about gardening and the importance of taking care of plants as they provide us with food such as fruits and vegetables. The children then pledge to take care of the garden together with the teachers.

We then posed a question to the children: “How can you care for the plants?” They shared with us that one of the ways is to water the plants. They also discussed with the teachers on ways to save water and came up with the idea of using rainwater to water the plants.

The children did rain catcher together with their friends using plastic bottles which they brought from home. The teachers then placed the rain catcher outside to collect rainwater during rainy days. The water was then used to water the plants in the clsssroom.

Children from different levels take turns to visit the centre’s very own outdoor garden. Teachers then shared with children the names of each plants, exposing them to the different parts of the plant and showing them ways to care for the plants in the garden.

They were also given the opportunity to experience planting seeds such as the bittergourd. The seeds were presented to the children before they start planting it. During lesson, teachers introduce to them the life cycle of a plant. The children were so elated when they get to finally reap what they had sowed!

A fund-raising event was then organized with the aim to educate the children on ways to help people who are less fortunate through the selling of bookmarks, greeting cards and keychains. In the process, the children get to express their creativity using natural items such as leaves, twigs and flower petals that can be found from the garden. Take a look at the wonderful crafts that our young Garden Heroes have made!

All proceeds from the fund-raising event will then be donated to President’s Challenge.

We have learned so much from this whole journey of SSDB! We believe that everyone can do their part in helping to care for the environment even how tiny it is. Every small acts will amount to something big in the end, as long as we keep in mind… “No one can do everything but everyone can do something.”
