From Soil to Plate

My First Skool @ Blk 269 Compassvale Link (CV4) embarked on the topic of vegetables and food wastage. We have seen children picking out vegetables on their plate and ending up in the bin. Hence, we would like to use SSDB as a platform and opportunity for children to experience the process of growing their own vegetables and the hard work and time that comes with it. We explored how we can create a more sustainable environment by buying locally produced vegetables, fish, and eggs. They are greener as these produce use less fuel and other resources when getting from farm to them, resulting in less greenhouse gas emissions.

We had our SSDB launch with the children in class on 15 June 2021 to mark the start of the project.

To kickstart the project, children experienced making salad where they will gain confidence to taste the different types of vegetables, talk about the vegetables they like and discuss the taste.

Teachers planned a Kangkong planting activity which provided opportunities for children to experience the hard work and time taken in the process of planting, at the same time observing how plants grow and need. Children were asked to bring in stem cutting of kangkong from home so they could also observe how plants can grow differently. During the process of planting, they recorded the plant growth of their kangkong. After 3 weeks, they harvested their kangkong collectively and auntie cooked the kangkong for them to taste during lunch!

It was a rewarding experience for both our children and teachers as they get to learn how kangkong can grow from seeds and stem cuttings. Teachers also use the activity as a reminder for children to reduce their food wastage. It was a successful and enjoyable project for everyone!
