FOOD STORY

Our K1 and K2 children at PCF Sparkletots Preschool @ Bukit Batok East Blk 241 embarked on a delightful learning journey about Food Safety through the Start Small Dream Big project in 2024. This project aimed to equip our little ones with essential knowledge and practical skills to ensure safe and nutritious food consumption.

Food Safety is a crucial aspect of maintaining good health and well-being. It involves the proper handling, cooking, and preservation of food to prevent foodborne illnesses. By exploring this topic, our children gained a deeper understanding of the importance of Food Safety in their daily lives.

Our young learners began their exploration by delving into Singapore’s Food Story. They discovered how food is sourced locally and from other countries, enriching their understanding of the diverse food landscape.

They eagerly colored templates featuring Singapore -farmed products, reinforcing their knowledge of local ingredients. To make learning fun and engaging, our children participated in various creative activities. They constructed ‘Grocery Fun’ models, showcasing their understanding of different food items.

Our little ones had a thrilling encounter with Oscar, the Food Safety mascot. Oscar introduced them to the ‘Five key tips’ for Food Safety, which they subsequently incorporated into posters with the help of their parents. These posters highlighting these essential tips, fostering collaborative learning.

Beyond theoretical knowledge, our children developed practical skills related to Food Safety. They learned to carefully select food, checking for the expiration dates on various products.

They even designed their own ‘Food Expiry Tracker’ using recycled materials, demonstrating their practical skills and creativity.

By examing the expiry dates of items in their refrigerators, the children applied their knowledge to real-life situations.

To further enhance their understanding, the children participated Ina face-to-face talk with Ms. Felicia from the Singapore Food Agency. The interactive session provided valuable insights and made learning enjoyable.

The culmination of our Food Safety journey was a fantastic exhibition showcasing the children’s beautiful creations and highlighting their learning. The event was a celebration of their achievements and a testament to their enthusiasm for Food Safety.

Most of the parents appreciated the project and few of their feedback in their own words are:

“The SSDB project was an innovative project for the children, where the children learned about the importance of supporting the SG grown produce and appreciate it a better way. As parents, we are glad to see our child being engaged in these kind of meaning activities”.

“Thank you for involving children in the SSDB project as they learnt about Food Safety in their early age. I believe my son has understood the basic concept of food validity and how to keep it safe at certain temperatures and finish before the expiry date”.

“Thank you for introducing this project to the children. Through this my child is able to understand the dos and donts of handling food items. She is able to understand the expiration dates. She should be able to make informed choice about what food items to consume and what to avoid”.

“The SSDB is a great project for the children and parents as well because we learnt about SG Local Produce. Nowadays my child is looking for SG products and expiry date whenever she tags along with us for shopping. Thank you for the early exposure”.

Through the Start Small Dream Big project, our K1 and K2 children at our preschool gained a deeper understanding of the Food Safety. The engaging activities and hands-on experiences equipped them with the essential knowledge and skills that will serve them well throughout their lives. By promoting Food Safety, we are nurturing healthier individuals and contributing to a safer community.
