In the month of May, the children focused on the concept ‘Our Green City’ as they embarked on their SSDB gardening project. The N2 and K1 children were engaged in a repertoire of activities that allowed them to gain understanding and knowledge about the green spaces that can be found in Singapore.
The N2 and K1 children firstly learnt about the types of animals and plants that they can see or find in nature. After listening to the story “An Adventure in a City in a Garden” by Hui-Ling Chua, they identified the various animals, insects and plants that were seen in the story. The children then shared how they felt about the various living things found in the garden city. They further explored about the living things through a matching game with their peers.
Next, the N2 children were given the opportunities to learn more about the natural environment through a game of ‘I Spy’. They were encouraged to listen to the objects described by their teacher and search for them in the natural environment. They also learnt to use the iPads to snap photographs of the objects which they have found.
Similarly, the K1 children were tasked to look for plants, insects and other living things that can be found in their natural surrounding after listening to the biodiversity story. They were also tasked to take pictures of the living things using the iPad.
The N2 and K1 children displayed a sense of wonder and curiosity as they talked about the photographs that they have captured. They displayed interest in the topic by asking questions about the objects found in nature, and sharing their findings with their teachers and peers.
