Embracing inclusivity - creating awareness and empathy on dementia

Introduction:

The SSDB initiative was launched to promote awareness and empathy towards disabilities among our students. The prelaunch activities aimed to create a supportive and inclusive environment, encouraging children to understand and appreciate the experiences of individuals with disabilities.

Prelaunch Activities:

  • Provocation Table: A wax toy display representing people with disabilities sparked curiosity and conversation.

  • Inclusive Storybooks: Teachers engaged with books emphasizing inclusion and teamwork.

  • Videos and Experiential Activities: Real-life examples of resilience and adaptability were showcased.

  • “Walk in My Shoes” Game: Children simulated visual impairment to foster empathy.

Understanding Dementia:

  • Introduction to Dementia: Teachers explained dementia as an illness leading to psychomotor and cognitive disabilities.

  • Dementia-focused Storybooks: Age-appropriate stories introduced the concept of dementia.

  • Teachers explained to children the simple term of understanding dementia is forgetfulness, and it is ok to be absentminded sometimes.

Learning Journey to Punggol Regional Library:

  • Awareness through Exploration: Children saw community support for individuals with disabilities.

  • Calming Pod: A special area for overwhelmed individuals demonstrated inclusive design.

Conclusion:

The SSDB launch significantly impacted children’s understanding and empathy towards individuals with disabilities. Interactive activities, storybooks, and community exploration fostered a culture of inclusivity and support. This initiative educated children and promoted a supportive environment within the school community.

By working together, we can create a society that values and supports inclusivity and empathy.
