Caring Starts From You and Me

‘A Caring and Inclusive Home for All’ - a theme that teaches children to show care and appreciation to others and to also embrace diversity regardless of differences and abilities. In line with the theme for this year and also the current situation of the Covid-19 outbreak in Singapore, our centre has planned to teach children to give back and to show care for the foreign workers around the neighbourhood like the cleaners and also the people living around the neighbourhood.

Due to the Circuit Breaker, our plan of creating a care package to be given out to the foreign workers and the people living around the neighbourhood had to be pushed back. Therefore, our teachers had planned some pre activities that we can carry out for the K1 and K2 children after they had returned back to school after the Circuit Breaker.

After the children had returned back to school, we had carried out discussions and activities on how we can protect ourselves and others after the Circuit Breaker is over.

Our first activity was a discussion about the importance of social distancing through listening to a story titled ‘Time to Come in Bear’. After listening to the story, the teachers had led the children in a discussion about Covid-19, why there was a need for Circuit Breaker, who are the frontliners helping to fight the virus and also the importance of social distancing.

Our second activity was on teaching the children the proper handwashing technique. The children had first started the activity with the black pepper and soap experiment where the black pepper was the germs being washed away by the soap. For the experiment, the containers used for the experiment were washed after each child had conducted the experiment.

After conducting the experiment, the children had learnt about the 8 steps of handwashing.

For the third activity, the children created an artwork called ‘Blow the Germs Away’ where the children had learnt about how fast germs can spread to other people.

Through these pre activities, the children had learnt about how it is important to keep themselves safe and also keeping the others around them safe as well especially during the outbreak.

Due to the outbreak, our centre had a virtual launch for SSDB this year. Through this launch, it had showcased to the parents about what the K1 and K2 children had done and also our plan for this project. In the video, the parents were taught how to create their own DIY hand sanitizer which they can make with their children at home.

As we continue to embark on our SSDB project, we will continue to teach the children to care for everyone regardless of differences and abilities and to also continue protecting themselves and others during this outbreak.
