In line with our theme on Ocean life, children were exposed to the reality of marine debris. Marine debris is trash or other solid material that enters ocean and often washes up on beaches. Thus causing sea life to be affected by pollution. An example of this is with the sea turtles. When a turtle sees a plastic bag floating around in the ocean, the sea turtle might mistake it for jellyfish and swallow it whole.
As marine debris is a symptom of a much larger water pollution problem, I thought it would be most appropriate to extend children’s learning by taking them to the beach to get our Pasir Ris beach cleaned up!
It was a good lesson where children saw first hand the affects of littering and learnt the need to take responsibility of their trash. By taking part in the beach clean-up, we are leaving a great example to others on how to reduce marine debris and keep sea life healthy and happy. A beach clean up is also a way to keep beaches and the environment healthy for everyone to enjoy!
Good job K1s, let’s keep the Singapore beaches clean!
