Back to the Good Old Days with our Infants, Playgroup and Pre-Nursey Children

Whoosh, we went back in time!

Adopting the Project Approach, our little learners engaged in a range of sub-themes. Specifically, the Early Years; Infant Care, Playgroup, and Pre-Nursery will be setting foot into the “The Era of Masak Masak” through endless Sensory Play and Messy Play explorations and experiences.

Our infants not only explored nature, but also made music using everyday household items. They explored “cooking” with nature materials such as leaves and acorns and developed their senses and motor skills through through their 5 senses. Our infants also got to explore Oobleck. They worked hard to try and “pick” it up. Once they did, it would turn to liquid in their hand and flow back into the container. Oobleck is not only safe to play with, but also taste safe! Can you hear music playing? Using household items, they experienced cause and effect of sounds produced as they played with household tools.

Our entire Playgroup learning environment was transformed into a Kampong and muddy fields as we stepped foot into the Good Old Days. Games, dramatic play, books and photographs played a huge part in giving us the chance to experience this journey! Our Playgroup children were introduced to the different types of toys and games in the old days through story, video, song and hands-on activities. Some examples were Chongkak, paper balls, chapteh & 5 stones! The literacy area, filled with books, rhymes and songs from the past eras played a fruitful role in introducing us to the theme. Our little explorers also experienced homemade mud dough (claypot cooking & pottery), Pandan Dye (pounding with pestle & mortar), Pandan Playdough (kueh making), The Banana Tree (essential crops), Finding Potatoes (rural & sustainable farming) and Messy Rice Play.

Our Pre-Nursery children had their hands busy with the various common daily chores around the house. Playing the role of filial children to their parents, our children pretended to help their “parents” serve drinks to house guests, helped to keep their “house” clean using using brooms, brushes and dusters. After a long day, our children also learned how clothes were washed during a time when washing machines were uncommon in Singapore. Using a washing board and brush, they washed a piece of clothing of their own, hung it up on a drying line and a peg, and folded it neatly under the guidance of their class teachers. Amazing Job, Pre-Nursery!
