As we talk about the world around us and what is currently happening, it is to no surprise that we needed to discuss about the dreaded COVID-19 pandemic. As we like to keep the children in our school aware of what is happening in the world around them, we found it important to talk about what the virus does to your body and how to protect ourselves. They learned about how prevention is better than anything else at this point because the virus is new and there is no cure.
Aside from this, it is also fitting to talk about our Frontliners who are continuously risking their lives to keep us safe. As we began to define who the Frontliners are, they immediately mentioned the doctors and the nurses who are helping the sick. After acknowledging their answers to be true, we wanted to challenge the children to observe the people around them that also help. That led them to talk about the cleaners and security guards around the OCBC Centre that make sure things are sanitised and that the people entering the building are not sick.
Although they are not in the medical field, the children learned to appreciate what they do because it helps in preventing them from getting sick to begin with. This also gave us a chance as teachers to talk about how every seemingly “little” contribution everyone does in this time is helping the country as a whole. Following this train of thought, the children started to talk about how it would be great to show appreciation to them as a thank you for keeping them safe in their own way.
They continued to brain storm and came up with the idea of writing thank you letters to them.
Learning about the activity, we also invited the parents to be involved. To work together and encourage their children, they also worked in donating some goods for us to give out as well.
Together the children and their parents worked together to show appreciation to the people who make prevention happen in their workplace and school. The children, teachers, and parents contributing into this big project helped emphasise to the little ones that every small step is still moving towards something bigger and better.
As we work towards beating this pandemic, we learned that every little contribution helps. The children hope with their small gesture, the people around them would feel encouraged to continue contributing in their own way as well.
