"Little Hands, Big Hearts" by Kinderland Preschool, Sengkang

In conjunction with Kinderland’s ”Little Entrepreneur” 2017 and ECDA’s ”Start Small Dream Big” projects, the teachers and children of Kinderland Preschool, Sengkang hosted a carnival on 20 July 2017, from 4-7pm within the Centre’s premises to raise funds for the otters at Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS). This idea was sparked off after discussions with the team of teachers, and a carnival was decided so that every class (regardless of age) can contribute their ideas and creativity in developing a booth. We began the planning process a month before the actual event and children were encouraged to think of ways to set up their various booths.

The Kindergarten 1 and 2 children were stationed at the booths during the event to boost sales. The experience  developed their entrepreneurial and problem solving skills as they thought of creative ways to attract more “customers” to their booths.  In giving them the opportunity to take ownership of this project and make decisions, it encouraged them to voice their opinions and enhance their confidence.

The children used recycled materials to create games, with recycled cans in “Knock It Down” and recycled 1.5-litre bottles in “Ring of Light”.  In addition, art pieces made by our children from the Infant to Kindergarten 2 classes were also sold to raise funds.

The carnival was well appreciated by the parents and children. Parents gave good feedback and mentioned that it was a fun time for them to bond with their children while raising funds for a good cause. Most importantly, the Carnival helped the children to better understand the importance of corporate social responsibility by “giving back” to society.

Children put up signages with information on what they are doing.

Parents and children have fun with the “Can Toss” game.

The children manned food stall to feed their hungry customers.

Documentation Panels put up for parents to show the children’s learning journey.
