Enriching time
Children in this centre are spoilt for choice when it comes to enrichment programmes. External vendors have been engaged to coach the children in table tennis and Akido and to provide English Speech & Drama lessons. Teachers in the centre also conduct Chinese Enrichment programmes, K1 and K2 reading enrichment programme and phonics for nursery children outside the curriculum hours.
During curriculum hours, K1 and K2 children go through the Riggs phonic programme and all children are put through a reading programme whereby they bring two books home per week to read with their parents over the weekend. When they return to school the following week, they will do book reviews and show and tell about the books they have read. Besides helping children to develop their language skills, this programme also encourage parent-child bonding and parents’ participation in their children’s development.
PRAISE (Perseverance, Reflection, Appreciation, Inventiveness, Sense of wonder & curiosity, Engagement)
The centre started introducing these six dispositions to the children through six books which tell stories related to the dispositions. These books are written in English.
Then the teachers decided that there should be a Chinese version with their own interesting activities built in to teach the six dispositions to the children. As such, they got together, translated the six books, come up with follow-up activities and then put the children through the lessons.
Their efforts won them the MOE Innovation Award. They have now progressed to printing their translated versions into big books. They have also produced a video to document how the children have benefitted from this programme.
Feedback from Parents
Just outside the main door of this centre is a Feedback Board where comments and feedback from parents are posted. There are positive feedbacks, comments on the centre’s programme and also suggestions on the improvements to programmes in the centre. Below are two comments taken from this board:
“My child is always looking forward to go to school every day. He loves to learn new things in school. Keep it up teachers for doing an excellent job.”
“We just wanted to let you know how much we appreciate everything you have done to help my child improve his learning and social processing.”
